The Barok in a dress photo should have been such a non-issue. I like many others I saw the photo and immediately thought "well this is the final flush that will suck the Hillmister turd out to sea".
Then came the response, OBAMA "Everybody knows that whether it's me or Senator Clinton, or Bill Clinton, that when you travel to other countries they ask you to try on traditional garb that you have been given as a gift," he told WAOI, "The notion that the Clinton campaign would be trying to circulate this as a negative on the same day that Senator Clinton was giving a speech about how we repair our relationships around the world is sad. We are going to try to stay focused on what will make a difference in our foreign policy, including bringing the war in Iraq to an honorable end."
This was a family thing and everyone knows sometimes when you visit the relatives you have to put on the weird sweater. You put the sweater on gladly and out of love and respect for your family. You look at the pictures in later years with the kids and snicker about it. Is Obama ashame of his culture? He has always made it known part of his family was from Kenya. So why is he taking the time to explain the picture in this wimpy manner.
My feelings are that you embrace your heritage and respect your history. Those folks sacrificed a lot to get you where you are and they deserve your respect and your love. If you truly love your family you don't dismiss them EVEN IF YOUR RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT.

Turkey in radical revision of Islamic texts

Turkey is preparing to publish a document that represents a revolutionary reinterpretation of Islam - and a controversial and radical modernization of the religion.
The country's powerful Department of Religious Affairs has commissioned a team of theologians at Ankara University to carry out a fundamental revision of the Hadith, the second most sacred text in Islam after the Koran.
The Hadith is a collection of thousands of sayings reputed to come from the Prophet Muhammad.
As such, it is the principal guide for Muslims in interpreting the Koran and the source of the vast majority of Islamic law, or Sharia.

But the Turkish state has come to see the Hadith as having an often negative influence on a society it is in a hurry to modernise, and believes it responsible for obscuring the original values of Islam.
It says that a significant number of the sayings were never uttered by Muhammad, and even some that were need now to be reinterpreted.
'Reformation'
Commentators say the very theology of Islam is being reinterpreted in order to effect a radical renewal of the religion.
Its supporters say the spirit of logic and reason inherent in Islam at its foundation 1,400 years ago are being rediscovered. Some believe it could represent the beginning of a reformation in the religion.

Turkish officials have been reticent about the revision of the Hadith until now, aware of the controversy it is likely to cause among traditionalist Muslims, but they have spoken to the BBC about the project, and their ambitious aims for it.
The forensic examination of the Hadiths has taken place in Ankara University's School of Theology.
An adviser to the project, Felix Koerner, says some of the sayings - also known individually as "hadiths" - can be shown to have been invented hundreds of years after the Prophet Muhammad died, to serve the purposes of contemporary society.
"Unfortunately you can even justify through alleged hadiths, the Muslim - or pseudo-Muslim - practice of female genital mutilation," he says.
"You can find messages which say 'that is what the Prophet ordered us to do'. But you can show historically how they came into being, as influences from other cultures, that were then projected onto Islamic tradition."
The argument is that Islamic tradition has been gradually hijacked by various - often conservative - cultures, seeking to use the religion for various forms of social control.
Leaders of the Hadith project say successive generations have embellished the text, attributing their political aims to the Prophet Muhammad himself.
Revolutionary
Turkey is intent on sweeping away that "cultural baggage" and returning to a form of Islam it claims accords with its original values and those of the Prophet.
But this is where the revolutionary nature of the work becomes apparent. Even some sayings accepted as being genuinely spoken by Muhammad have been altered and reinterpreted.
Prof Mehmet Gormez, a senior official in the Department of Religious Affairs and an expert on the Hadith, gives a telling example.
"There are some messages that ban women from travelling for three days or more without their husband's permission and they are genuine.
"But this isn't a religious ban. It came about because in the Prophet's time it simply wasn't safe for a woman to travel alone like that. But as time has passed, people have made permanent what was only supposed to be a temporary ban for safety reasons."
The project justifies such bold interference in the 1,400-year-old content of the Hadith by rigorous academic research.
Prof Gormez points out that in another speech, the Prophet said "he longed for the day when a woman might travel long distances alone".
So, he argues, it is clear what the Prophet's goal was.
Original spirit
Yet, until now, the ban has remained in the text, and helps to restrict the free movement of some Muslim women to this day.

As part of its aggressive programme of renewal, Turkey has given theological training to 450 women, and appointed them as senior imams called "vaizes".
They have been given the task of explaining the original spirit of Islam to remote communities in Turkey's vast interior.
One of the women, Hulya Koc, looked out over a sea of headscarves at a town meeting in central Turkey and told the women of the equality, justice and human rights guaranteed by an accurate interpretation of the Koran - one guided and confirmed by the revised Hadith.
She says that, at the moment, Islam is being widely used to justify the violent suppression of women.
"There are honour killings," she explains.
"We hear that some women are being killed when they marry the wrong person or run away with someone they love.
"There's also violence against women within families, including sexual harassment by uncles and others. This does not exist in Islam... we have to explain that to them."
'New Islam'
According to Fadi Hakura, an expert on Turkey from Chatham House in London, Turkey is doing nothing less than recreating Islam - changing it from a religion whose rules must be obeyed, to one designed to serve the needs of people in a modern secular democracy.
He says that to achieve it, the state is fashioning a new Islam.
"This is kind of akin to the Christian Reformation," he says.
"Not exactly the same, but if you think, it's changing the theological foundations of [the] religion. "
Fadi Hakura believes that until now secularist Turkey has been intent on creating a new politics for Islam.
Now, he says, "they are trying to fashion a new Islam."
Significantly, the "Ankara School" of theologians working on the new Hadith have been using Western critical techniques and philosophy.
They have also taken an even bolder step - rejecting a long-established rule of Muslim scholars that later (and often more conservative) texts override earlier ones.
"You have to see them as a whole," says Fadi Hakura.
"You can't say, for example, that the verses of violence override the verses of peace. This is used a lot in the Middle East, this kind of ideology.
"I cannot impress enough how fundamental [this change] is."

Know Your Friends and Enemys
Its always been a pet theory of mine that the KORAN was a book written in 2 parts. The first, earliest, book I believe to have divinely inspired and inclusive of all the believers of the "one god". Muslims, Zoroastrians, Jews and Christians worshiping God.

5. Take control of as much of Hollywood, the press, TV, radio and the Internet as possible by buying the related corporations or a controlling stock.
6. Yield to the fear of the imminent shut-off of the lifeblood of America ? black gold. America?s economy depends on oil and 41 percent of it comes from the Middle East.
7. Yell ''foul, out-of-context, personal interpretation, hate crime, Zionist, un- American, inaccurate interpretation of the Quran'' anytime Islam is criticized or the Quran is analyzed in the public arena.
8. Encourage Muslims to penetrate the White House, specifically with Islamists who can articulate a marvelous and peaceful picture of Islam. Acquire government positions and get membership in local school boards. Train Muslims as medical doctors to dominate the medical field, research and pharmaceutical companies. (Ever notice how numerous Muslim doctors in America are, when their countries need them more desperately than America?) Take over the computer industry. Establish Middle Eastern restaurants throughout the U.S. to connect planners of Islamization in a discreet way.
9. Accelerate Islamic demographic growth via:
* Massive immigration (100,000 annually since 1961).
* Use no birth control whatsoever ? every baby of Muslimparents is automatically a Muslim and cannot choose anotherreligion later.
* Muslim men must marry American women and Islamize them (10,000 annually). Then divorce them and remarry every five years ? since one can't legally marry four at one time. This is a legal solution in America.
* Convert angry, alienated black inmates and turn them into militants (so far 2,000 released nmates have joined al-Qaida worldwide). Only a few ''sleeper cells'' have been captured in Afghanistan and on American soil.
10. Reading, writing, arithmetic and research through the American educational system, mosques and student centers (now 1,500) should be sprinkled with dislike of Jews, evangelical Christians and democracy. There are currently 300 exclusively Muslim schools in the U.S. which teach loyalty to the Quran, not the U.S. Constitution. In January of 2002, Saudi Arabia?s Embassy in Washington mailed 4,500 packets of the Quran and videos promoting Islam to America's high schools ? free of charge. Saudi Arabia would not allow the U.S. to reciprocate.
11. Provide very sizeable monetary Muslim grants to colleges and universities in America to establish ''Centers for Islamic studies'' with Muslim directors to promote Islam in higher-education institutions.
12. Let the entire world know through propaganda, speeches, seminars, local and national media that terrorists have hijacked Islam, when in truth, Islam hijacked the terrorists.
13. Appeal to the historically compassionate and sensitive Americans for sympathy and tolerance towards Muslims in America who are portrayed as mainly immigrants from oppressed countries.
14. Nullify America's sense of security by manipulating the intelligence community with misinformation. Periodically terrorize Americans with reports of impending attacks on bridges, tunnels, water supplies, airports, apartment buildings and malls.
15. Form riots and demonstrations in the prison system demanding Islamic Sharia as the way of life, not America's justice system.
16. Open numerous charities throughout the U.S., but use the funds to support Islamic terrorism with American dollars.
17. Raise interest in Islam on America's campuses by insisting freshman take at least one course on Islam.
18. Unify the numerous Muslim lobbies in Washington, mosques, Islamic student centers, educational organizations, magazines and papers by Internet and an annual convention to coordinate plans, propagate the faith and engender news in the media.
19. Send intimidating messages and messengers to the outspoken individuals who are critical of Islam and seek to eliminate them by hook or crook.
20. Applaud Muslims as loyal citizens of the U.S. by spotlighting their voting record as the highest percentage of all minority and ethic groups in America.

To All United States Troops - Thank You
This was posted on Jerry Pournelle's, CHAOS MANOR site, the link is on the right hand side of the blog. Dr. Pournelle site is the prototype for every blog since Al Gore invented the internet ;^) If you want to catch up on the education your government school neglected to provide it is a "must read". BTW I'm so glad to hear the medico's report that Dr. Pournelle will be around to enlighten us still, great news.
I'm a Air Force brat/camp follower TSgt Sutter, my dad, retired after we just got out of Iran in 78. My Uncle Brad was Army and at Chosin Reservoir, Uncle Jerry a Marine in Korea also. My Uncle Norm and Aunt Glo Navy and my Uncle George Army. My soon to be son-in-law is undergoing training up in D.C to be a Tomb Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown. His brother-in-law is Army also, back from Iraq missing a leg. Most people have no idea the dedication of these men who stand on the wall thousands of miles from Home and Family and keep us safe day and night.
Think about these men and women as you read this.

I want to preface this by saying I don't have a thing against Heath Ledger. In fact, until yesterday, I didn't even know who he was. I'm not a movie buff and don't spend much time watching them.
But today at lunch, I happened to be in a restaurant in which a news program was running on one of the TVs. And, of course, his story came up. The coverage was extensive, interviews with fellow actors were conducted, his dad spoke, and everyone was obviously saddened by his loss.
I guess the irony came as I happened to look away from the TV and onto the page of the USA Today I was reading. Page 8A. A small box in the middle of the page which held 4 names. Names of troops killed in Iraq. One name caught my eye. SSG Justin R. Whiting, 27, of Hancock, NY.
The reason his name caught my eye initially was his age. He was a year younger than Heath Ledger. I read the short description in the box for Justin Whiting.
"died Saturday in Mosul from wounds suffered when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device; 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne)."
That's it. That's all. Page 1D and 4D in the paper were all about Heath Ledger. Whiting got a sentence.
But that sentence said a lot about Justin Whiting. A 27 year old SSG, he was one sharp soldier. That's a fairly young age to make that rank. And, of course he was a paratrooper. In fact, I'd bet my bottom dollar he had served with either the 82nd Airborne Division or the 173rd Airborne Brigade - or both.
And he was Special Forces. He had earned and wore the coveted green beret. He was quite a young man and I know all of that from that one simple sentence, because I know what it took to be where he was, wearing the rank and beret he wore at his age.
I don't begrudge Heath Ledger his fame. I'm sure he was a fine actor. I certainly am sorry about his death. But I often think back to what Henry Fonda is credited with saying about being honored for his acting. He said he was surprised by all the hoopla because, in reality, all he did was pretend to be someone else who had actually done something. Perhaps if Ledger had lived he might have found his greatest role playing Jason Whiting in some future movie.

Like many of you I am disappointed at the lack of Conservative values represented in the leading Republican Presidential Candidate, John McCain. I had this problem a few day ago during our Primary here in Florida, I cast my vote for the most conservative left on the ticket. Even though my personal choice had already left the race.
My reasoning is to show the R.N.C. the backing for dedicated Conservative principals. I do not want 65% Conservatives running my party, and by all of us getting out to vote for any other candidate left on the ballot we will send a huge message to the Party bigwigs. It does not matter if they win, the fact that we went out and Voted. The number crunchers at the R.N.C. can read and McCain may well have the nomination wrapped up. But if the VOTERS can still put up 30 or 40% to anybody else we will make a huge statement to 'said' Candidate and the National Committee. They will have to make a solid binding commitment to the Conservative base of our Party, or take the real risk of those same Core Conservatives sitting it out in November.
We have a big tent in the Republican Party and I can vote in November for McCain, without holding my nose, be cause I know in my heart he is a honorable man and will defend this Country to the death. But I wont vote for him if I feel he will run roughshod the party I have been a member of for 29 years.
I am not a Suicide Voter and some Conservatives would call me a RINO, because I am pro-choice. I might said the same thing, a time or to, in the heat of an argument about someone's lack of support for the 2nd Amendment. But I feel I could pass anyone's "Conservative Test" with at least a 90% or better and I won't vote for someone to represent me if I believe he will cause hurt to my family or my country.
So what will it take to convince me, simple, a NEW CONTRACT WITH AMERICA, signed by him. Nothing fancy, 2 pages double spaced with bullets, probably 25 or 30 points that tell me absolutely where he will stand and who his running mate will be. I want to see a little "straight talk", then I will decide. If he passes muster and I will put my time and money behind him. If he doesn't pass muster I will give him nothing, absolutly nothing not even the time to check off a Vote in the booth.
I will still vote on the rest of the ballot for my state and local races, but I will not support someone who will lessen me.
